Leather Working

A wide range of leather is obtained from the hides, pelts and skins of animals. It is a very popular clothing material and its other uses are legion. To convert the raw material into usable and decorated form i.e. leather, it undergoes several process like dying, painting, carving, stamping and embossing etc. collectively these processes are known as leather working. Leather working is done to provide desired finish into leather.

Leather which is a skin or hide of animal, is cured by tanning to prevent decay and to impart flexibility and toughness. After tanning, leather is generally treated with fats to assure pliability. Since early 18th century, machines are invented to split the tanned leather into a flesh layer and a grain or hair-side layer. It may be brought out by rubbing, as in goatskin, or may be imitated by embossing. Some more finishes are given on leather like glazing, coloring with stains or dyes, enameling or lacquering and sueding etc.

When we talk about different types of utilization of leather then we can say that it is very well used for the process of dying, painting, carving embossing and many more. Leather dying is process in which spirit and alcohol based dyes are used. Adding more explanation to the patterns sometime there is the use of hi-liters and antique stains. Having pigments to break away from the higher points pooling becomes easy which give background area nice contrast in case of leather dying.

Leather painting is another process in which a two dimensional surface board is used in both ideal and common. Leather painting is a very distinguished process as compared to leather dying. Leather painting cannot be used for belts and wallets because its a technique which cannot be used on items that receive friction. Leather painting can be performed in three dimensional form.

Thirdly talking about leather carving, it is a process that make leather beautiful. There are different types of tools which are used for leather carvings. Leather carving is mostly done on leather which is used to compress moistened leather . There are different tools which are used to carve leather and they are swivel knife, veiner, beveler, pear shader, seeder, cam, and backgrounder.
