Leather painting is a, altogether different process from leather dyeing. In this process the paint remains only on the surface of lather while dyes are absorbed into the leather. Because of this difference, leather painting technique cannot be used on items that can or must bend plus not on items that receive friction. For this reason belts and wallets can't be given this treatment.
For leather painting a two dimensional surface backed with a board is ideal and common. Often acrylic paints are used on tooled leather pictures backed with wood or cardboard and then it is framed. The glass is not put on top of such pictures because it causes the leather to mold. For leather painting three dimensional forms are also possible as long as the painted surface remains secured.
