Leather Carving

Carving is done on leather to make it beautiful. Leather carving is done using metal implements to compress moistened leather. It is preciously done to give a three dimensional appearance to a two dimensional surface. The surface of the leather is not intended to be cut through at all. This kind of work is also known as filigree. In the United States and Mexico, predominantly the western floral style of carving is done on leather. These are generally stylized pictures of acanthus or roses.

The tools which are used to carve leather are:- swivel knife, veiner, beveler, pear shader, seeder, cam, and backgrounder. Some other tools are punch-type implements struck with a wooden or raw hide mallet. This is to add further definition by them to the cut lines made by the swivel knife. After carving leather it becomes more attractive and can be used in several applications.
